5 Shades of Anarchy

ImageI have a love/hate relationship with 50 Shades of Grey.  On one hand, I’m fascinated by the phenomenon and what that says about our culture. And then, I cringe at the sexual politics, Twilight adjacent-ness and  poor writing of the novels.

When it was announced that a movie would be made, casting speculations ran wild.  People had formed a mental image of Christian Gray and  the actor that would portray him.  From Ian Somerhalder, Matt Bomer, Ryan Gosling and countless others.  Even Robert Pattinson, who’s Edward Cullen character inspired the damn  book in the first place.

Sons of Anarchy actor, Charlie Hunnam was not at the top of the list or came to my mind as the perfect choice as Christian Grey. I love Charlie as Jax Teller on Sons of Anarchy. In this role, he is the “Hamlet” of a Shakespearean inspired motorcycle club.   At first glance, you might think that this role is so different from Christian Grey.  Here are 5 ways Jax and Christian are alike:

Swagger and Confidence
Both characters know they are hot.  They ride the line between confidence and arrogance.  Jax and Christian naturally strut their stuff.

ImageYoung Leaders
Both are young leaders in business.  Jax and Christian are the boss of their respective organizations.

Messed Upped Childhoods
Neither man grew up in a “normal” household.

Controlling Boyfriend/Husband
They are also the boss in the bedroom. Their women hold little “say so” in the relationship.

Comfortable Naked
Both characters had/will have nude scenes, much to the delight of many.
